Hillmorton Hospital Specialist Mental Health Services: A Model of Safety and Sustainability in Canterbury
The newly developed Hillmorton Hospital Specialist Mental Health Services facilities in Canterbury, New Zealand, are meticulously designed to provide a diverse range of therapeutic spaces that prioritise freedom of choice for whaiora and whānau. These state-of-the-art spaces feature striking interiors, abundant natural light, and seamless connections to the outdoors, creating a welcoming and warm atmosphere.
Throughout the campus, a range of Featurecraft’s Fire RatedMDF Veneer Battens has been installed to accommodate the various spaces and functions of the building. Each batten, crafted with an MDF core and finished in American White Oak Veneer, is supplied in a 10mm x 50mm profile. Although the battens vary in lengths, backing materials and installation, the characteristics of the battens remain consistent which has resulted in a beautiful, harmonious space throughout.
These battens are fire-rated to meet the highest safety standards in New Zealand, guaranteeing optimal protection for patients. The project also underscores a strong commitment to sustainability, earning a prestigious 5-Star Greenstar design and as-built rating. This accomplishment positions these facilities among the first Greenstar-rated mental health units in New Zealand.
This environment fosters a sense of place and inspiration, enhancing oranga hinegaro – mental wellbeing – for everyone who interacts with these facilities.
